Are Smartphones Eye-Safe?

Do you ever wonder about the effect your mobile device might be having on your sight? In truth, these devices are wonderful, because they let us stay connected no matter where we are. However most people have a habit of holding their handheld devices right in front of their eyes. Reading off the small screens that these devices feature can often create a whole set of demands for your eyes.

Because people tend to hold smart phones so close, our eyes end up working overtime, just to look at text and images. Over time, research shows this may lead to problems with focus and vision, especially if you already wear glasses. Any eye care professional will tell you that when glasses-wearing individuals have a lot of small screen time, the eyes have an even harder time correcting for distance. This puts strain on your eyes, and you wind up with headaches or migraines, which aren't pleasant.

Also, too much screen time can make you blink less, and that can lead to dry eyes and blurry vision.

What can we do keep our eyes strong, while still using our phones? In order to stop eyestrain and blurred vision resulting from the use of handheld devices, it's best to set your phone to display all text in a larger font, and hold the screen further away from your face. It's also good to try using your device in shorter increments, and giving your eyes regular breaks. If you still experience headaches, you might have presbyopia, and need glasses to fix that. Come see us for an exam, if this is something you're worried about. Learning to be smart about your smartphone will only protect your eyes.

On 11/24/2020 our office experienced a fire. Thankfully, everyone is safe. While our office is unusable, we are now seeing patients in our brand new State-of-the-Art Mobile Eye Clinic. We are still taking appointments, taking contact lens orders and we are still dispensing glasses.

Our direct phone lines have been out of order. Please call: 781-805-5008 for a team member. Call back times are slightly longer. Please leave us a message and we will get back to you as soon as possible. We apologize for any inconvenience and thank you for your patience during these trying times.
